United Pool Council
The United Pool Council is a group of public pool swimmers whose
mission is to keep the neighborhood pools public, well maintained, and
well used. We are committed to making the health and fitness benefits
of swimming available to all Berkeley citizens, and lessons available to
all youth regardless of income, skill or fitness level.
The pools are a valuable feature of Berkeley life. Swimming is not only
essential for water safety, it is also an art, as taught by the public
pools staff. It's an aerobic and non-impact form of exercise for the
whole body. Swimming builds core strength, especially when practiced
year-round. An optimum stress-reliever and mood enhancer, it relaxes
and invigorates. For many, swimming promotes healing for joint, muscle
and bone trauma. The pools are vibrant community centers where one
interacts with one's neighbors of all ages in a positive social
environment.
The UPC meets monthly, periodically connecting with Parks and
Recreation, City Council, and BUSD. We work on facility maintainance,
Schools to Pools, Solarization and energy efficiency, pool events,
public awareness, and funding swim for homeless youth.
